I WANT TO THANK YOU MY FAMILY WHO IS HERE TODAY, FOR THEIR SUPPORT NOT ONLY DURING THE ELECTION CYCLE BUT OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS. THEY ARE THE BOOTS ON THE GROUND THAT MAKE THIS HAPPEN FOR ME. NOT JUST TO RUN A CAMPAIGN AND GET HERE, BUT THE EVERY DAY STUFF THAT I HAVE TO MISS, THAT MAKES IT SO HARD. BUT I KNOW THEY SUPPORT ME. I ESPECIALLY HAVE TO THANK MY HUSBAND AND RECOGNIZE HIM BECAUSE HE NEVER ONCE HAS SAID "DON'T DO THIS ANYMORE." HE KNOWS EXACTLY WHY I SIT HERE. AND I HAVE TO THANK HIM FOR THAT. I LOVE YOU. I WANT TO THANK ESPECIALLY ALL THE EMPLOYEES WHO ARE HERE TODAY WHO MADE THIS DAY POSSIBLE BECAUSE THEY ARE HERE, AS MANY OF YOU KNOW, IT'S THANKSGIVING BREAK, AND SO THEY ARE HERE, JUDGE TWINE THOMAS, THANK YOU SO MUCH. >>Linda Gray: I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN BUT I KNOW IT SHOULD BE BRIEF. I DON'T THINK I HAVE EVER HAD EXPERIENCED ANYTHING AS ENDURING YET MEANINGFUL THAN RUNNING FOR A CAMPAIGN, FOR THE SAKE OF OUR CHILDREN. AND I WOULD THINK THAT I AM REMINDED THAT I HAD TO DIG VERY DEEP AND REMEMBER WHY I SPENT THOSE HOURS AND HOURS AND HOURS OF TRYING TO GET THE WORD OUT. AND I KNOW IT WAS FOR THE KIDS. AND I AM REMINDED ALL THE TIME HOW MUCH EACH OF YOU SPEND AS PUBLIC SERVANTS GIVING OUR SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS FOR YEARS AND OUR SUPERINTENDENT, JEFF EAKINS, AND ALL OF HIS FOLKS THAT SUPPORT HIM. I ESPECIALLY AM REMINDED OF THE THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS THAT I TAUGHT AND THEIR PARENTS. I AM ALSO THANKFUL FOR THE RELIGIOUS LEADERS THAT HELPED GUIDE ME AND GAVE ME STRENGTH AND SUPPORTED ME THROUGHOUT. I AM DEEPLY APPRECIATIVE OF OUR BUSINESS COMMUNITY WHO MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR ME TO ACTUALLY HAVE MONEY TO DO THIS CAMPAIGN AND ARE VERY SUPPORTIVE. I KNOW RICHARD GONZMART ISN'T HERE BUT MANY OF YOU KNOW WHO HE IS, AND HIM AND I GO BACK A LONG WAY. I'M ALSO EXTREMELY PROUD THAT I CAN SAY THAT I HAVE NOT TAKEN ANYTHING FROM ANYBODY OTHER THAN THOSE WHO SUPPORT OUR KIDS, AND I HAVE JUST BURNED MONEY JUST BY MY FRIENDS AND MY COMMUNITY AND ALL THE EDUCATOR WHICH INCLUDE THOUSANDS OF TEACHERS. THAT'S THE SUPPORT THAT WE ALL WANT. IT REPRESENTS OUR COMMUNITY. IT REPRESENTS THE DEMOGRAPHICS THAT WE WILL SERVE. IT REPRESENTS THE RICH, THE POOR, THE AFFLUENT, THE ONES THAT HAVE VERY LITTLE LANGUAGE ABILITY, THOSE ARE THE CONSTITUENTS WHO I WILL BE THE VOICE FOR. AND I THINK THAT'S ENOUGH FOR RIGHT NOW, RIGHT ARE?  OKAY. THANKS, EVERYBODY. THANK YOU. [ APPLAUSE ]

YOUR EFFORTS TO RUN A SMOOTH MEETING IN WHICH ALL PARTIES HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK AND BE HEARD IS APPRECIATED. THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE BOARD CHAIR IS TO PROVIDE LEADERSHIP TO THE BOARD AND ORGANIZATION OF OUR MEETINGS. OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR, YOU HAVE HELPED THIS BOARD AND DISTRICT TO DEVELOP A TEAM APPROACH TO THE FISCAL, LEGAL AND POLICY ISSUES THAT WE HAVE BEEN FACED WITH. WE HAVE BEGUN A PROCESS BY WHICH WE ARE NOW ANALYZING AND RESOLVING, DEVELOPING AND IMPLEMENTING POLICIES FOR ADMINISTRATION THAT WILL AID IN THE OVERSIGHT AND ORGANIZATION FOR YEARS TO COME. OUR DISTRICT IS WORKING TOWARDS A CULTURE TO FOSTER HIGH STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AS WELL AS EFFECTIVE RESOURCE MANAGEMENT, AND YOU HAVE BEEN AN INTEGRAL PART OF THAT PROCESS IN YOUR SEAT AS THE CHAIR. WE PRESENT YOU TODAY WITH A PIECE OF ART WORK THAT WAS CREATED FROM A PICTURE OF YOU ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL THIS YEAR AT BAILEY ELEMENTARY. YOU ARE SURROUNDED BY CHILDREN. YOUR CONTINUED EFFORTS TO KEEP STUDENTS AT THE FOREFRONT OF ALL DECISIONS IS UNWAVERING AND YOU HAVE REPRESENTED US WELL IN THE LAST YEAR. AND WE THANK YOU. [ APPLAUSE ] WE ALSO HAVE A RESOLUTION TO READ AND PRESENT TO YOU. WHEREAS APRIL GRIFFIN HAS COMPLETED HER TERM AS CHAIR OF THE SCHOOL BOARD OF HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA, AND WHEREAS HER CONSTANT CONCERN AND UNTIRING EFFORTS WERE INSTRUMENTAL IN PROVIDING THE BEST EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA, AND WHEREAS MS. BOARD MEMBERS, AS YOUR LIGHTS COME UP, WILL YOU PLEASE VOTE? AND IT IS UNANIMOUS. CONGRATULATIONS, MRS. GRIFFIN. [ APPLAUSE ] AND YOUR GAVEL.

>>April Griffin: WHICH I DID NOT HAVE TO USE OFTEN EXCEPT TO ADJOURN. YOU ALL HAVE BEEN WONDERFUL TO WORK WITH OVER THE PAST YEAR. AND MRS. STUART, UNLIKE YOUR HUSBAND, WELL, I'M VERY HAPPY THAT THIS TIME IS HERE BECAUSE IT'S BEEN A LONG, VERY DIFFICULT JOURNEY THIS YEAR. WE HAVE HAD A LOT OF THINGS THAT WE ARE WORKING ON. BUT MY HUSBAND, UNLIKE YOURS, HAS URGED ME TO LEAVE THIS POSITION MANY TIMES. SO HE'S VERY SUPPORTIVE, BUT IT IS, AS YOU AND YOUR BOARD MEMBERS WILL FIND OUT, IT TAKES A LOT OF HEART AND SOUL, AND IT TAKES A LOT OF YOUR PERSONAL TIME, BUT IT IS WORTH IT. AND I NOVEMBER THAT, AND HE KNOWS THAT. SO I LOOK FORWARD VERY MUCH TO WORKING WITH YOU OVER THE NEXT AT LEAST TWO YEARS THAT I AM HERE, AND HELPING YOU TO ACHIEVE WHAT IT IS YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE FOR OUR CHILDREN. SO I LOOK FORWARD TO THAT. AND TO MY FELLOW BOARD MEMBERS WHO HAVE BEEN BY MY SIDE, THIS JOURNEY, I AM SO EXCITED THAT WE GET TO CONTINUE AND MOVE FORWARD. CONGRATULATIONS AND WELCOME BACK. MR. EAKINS, AND LIKE MRS. STUART, LOOK FORWARD TO LIFE AHEAD BECAUSE I HAVE SAID TIME AND TIME AGAIN, WE HAVE BEEN IN ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF NOW OF DISCOVERY, AND KNOWING WHAT WE KNOW NOW, I FEEL CONFIDENT THAT UNDER YOUR LEADERSHIP IN THIS DISTRICT, AND THIS BOARD'S LEADERSHIP, WE WILL RIDE LIKE A PHOENIX AND FIND OUR WAY OUT SO WE CAN DO ALL OF THOSE WONDERFUL THINGS THAT WE TALKED ABOUT AT THAT FIRST RETREAT IN SPRING OF 2015. ALL OF THE SOCIAL SERVICES THAT WE WANT TO PROVIDE FOR OUR STUDENTS TO HELP THE WHOLE CHILD AS WE PREPARE OUR STUDENTS FOR LIFE. THAT'S OUR NEW VISION FOR THIS DISTRICT. AND IT IS ONE THAT MEANS SO MUCH TO ME. AND TO MRS. EDGECOMB AND MRS. KURDELL, AND THE YEARS OF SERVICE THAT THEY GAVE OUR CHILDREN IN THIS COMMUNITY, THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART. I KNOW HOW MUCH YOU LOVE THIS DISTRICT, HOW MUCH YOU LOVE THESE EMPLOYEES, AND HOW MUCH YOU LOVE THESE CHILDREN. AND MY ETERNAL GRATITUDE IS WITH YOU FOREVER. SO THANK YOU FOR THAT. AND TO YOUR ADMINISTRATION, JEFF, ALL OF THE PEOPLE THAT YOU HAVE SPENT A LOT OF TIME SURROUNDING YOURSELF WITH RECENTLY IN THE REORGANIZATION OF THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT, I BELIEVE IN EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU. YOU HAVE A TEAM AROUND YOU THAT IS THERE TO HELP YOU SUCCEED. AND WHEN I SEE THAT THEY ARE FALTERING I WILL LET YOU KNOW SO THAT WE CAN GET EVERYBODY ON THE RIGHT TRACK. BUT I DO BELIEVE IN EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU THAT YOU HAVE THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT, THESE CHILDREN, THIS SUPERINTENDENT, AND THIS BOARD AT THE CORE OF EVERYTHING YOU DO. SO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL OF THAT. AND WITH THAT, I WILL END IN SAYING, BOARD, THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONFIDENCE IN ALLOWING ME TO LEAD AND GUIDE THIS BOARD OVER THE PAST YEAR. IT HAS BEEN MY PLEASURE. THANK YOU. [ APPLAUSE ] AND I WILL NOW TURN THE GAVEL OVER TO OUR SUPERINTENDENT SO THAT HE CAN RUN OUR REORGANIZATION MEETING.

>> LET ME EXPLAIN THE PROCESS FOR EVERYONE SO EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS. FLORIDA STATUTE REQUIRES THIS BOARD TO ANNUALLY ELECT A CHAIR. THAT'S ALL THE STATUTE SAYS. THERE'S NO FURTHER GUIDANCE ON HOW YOU DO THAT. ANY OF YOU SEVEN MEMBERS ARE ELIGIBLE TO BE CHAIR. UNDER THE LAW, THE SUPERINTENDENT ACTS AS THE CHAIR UNTIL YOU SELECT A CHAIR AND VICE CHAIR. HE WILL ACCEPT NOMINATIONS. NOMINATIONS IN THIS CASE DO NOT NEED TO BE SECONDED. IF YOU WISH TO NOMINATE SOMEONE, TYPICALLY, YOU WOULD PUSH YOUR BUTTON BUT FOR THE PURPOSES OF ELECTION OF CHAIR YOU WILL RAISE YOUR HAND, BE RECOGNIZED BY THE SUPERINTENDENT. IF THERE ARE NO FURTHER NOMINATIONS HE WILL HAVE HAVE A NOMINATION TO CLOSE NOMINATIONS. AFTER THAT HE WILL DO THAT FOR VICE CHAIR F.MORE THAN ONE PERSON IS NOMINATED FOR CHAIR YOU WILL VOTE BY PAPER BALLOT WHICH THEN BECOME PUBLIC RECORD. WITH THAT BEING SAID, THE SUPERINTENDENT WILL NOW CONDUCT THE ELECTION OF CHAIR.

>>Jeffrey Eakins: THANK YOU, MR. PORTER. I DO WANT TO PERSONALLY WELCOME MRS. SHAMBURGER AND MRS. GRAY TO THE BOARD. IT'S A GREAT TEAM. AND WE ARE A TEAM. I LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING WITH BOTH OF YOU. AND MRS. GRIFFIN, THANK YOU FOR THE PARTNERSHIP WE HAVE HAD OVER THE LAST YEAR. YOUR LEADERSHIP THROUGH, AS YOU SAID, A LOT OF DIFFICULT TIMES, BUT WE HAVE TO PUSH THROUGH THOSE THINGS AND WE HAVE TO HAVE A LOT OF COURAGE DOING THAT. AND YOU HAD A LOT OF COURAGE AND A LOT OF THE ISSUES WE HAD TO FACE HEAD ON. I WANT TO THANK YOU AS A SUPERINTENDENT FOR YOUR LEADERSHIP OVER THE PAST YEAR. AS MR. PORTER ALREADY SAID, WE ARE ADVANCING IN TECHNOLOGY IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY. WE ARE GOING TO BE USING OUR HANDS AND PAPER TODAY FOR THE ELECTION. SO AT THIS MOMENT IN TIME, THE FLOOR IS NOW OPEN FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THE CHAIR. MRS. GRIFFIN?

>>April Griffin: I NOMINATE CINDY STUART FOR CHAIR OF THE.

>>Jeffrey Eakins: ARE THERE ANY OTHER NOMINATIONS? THERE ARE NO OTHER NOMINATION. COULD I HAVE A MOTION TO CLOSE THE NOMINATIONS? MOTION BY MRS. HARRIS. SECONDED BY MRS. VALDES. YOU CAN SHOW WITH YOUR HANDS THAT YOU AGREE WITH THAT MOTION TO CLOSE NOMINATIONS. PLEASE RAISE YOUR HAND. THANK YOU. MRS. STUART, CONGRATULATIONS, MADAM CHAIR. [ APPLAUSE ]

>> IF WE COULD CLARIFY, THERE'S NO NEED FOR A VOTE BECAUSE BY A.M. LAMBATION, MRS. STUART IS THE CHAIR.

>>Jeffrey Eakins: OKAY. PROCEED? DO I NOTICED TO DO THE VOTE? OKAY. THE FLOOR IS NOW OPEN FOR NOMINATIONS FOR VICE CHAIR. MRS. SNIVELY.

>>Melissa Snively: I WOULD LIKE TO NOMINATE SALLY HARRIS FOR VICE CHAIR.

>>Jeffrey Eakins: ARE THERE ANY OTHER NOMINATIONS FOR VICE CHAIR? MRS. GRIFFIN?

>>April Griffin: SHE BEAT ME TO IT.

>>Jeffrey Eakins: A SECOND BY MRS. HARRIS. AND A THREE. ALL RIGHT. ARE THERE ANY OTHER NOMINATIONS? THEN I NEED THE NOMINATION TO CLOSE THE NOMINATIONS FOR VICE CHAIR. I HAVE MRS. SNIVELY WITH THE SECOND BY MRS. STUART. AND WOULD YOU PLEASE RAISE YOUR HAND TO CLOSE NOMINATIONS? NOMINATIONS ARE CLOSED. AND SINCE WE HAVE IN A OTHER, OTHER THAN MRS. HARRIS, CONGRATULATIONS TO MRS. HARRIS. MADAM VICE CHAIR. [ APPLAUSE ]

>> AND BOTH OF THOSE VOTES WERE CLOSED BY A.M. LAMBATION.

>>Jeffrey Eakins: AT THIS TIME WE ARE GOING TO DO A TWO-MINUTE RECESS TO DO A LITTLE REORGANIZING HERE AND THEN WE'LL BE RIGHT BACK.

>>Cindy Stuart: THERE ARE NO WITHDRAWN ITEMS. I NEED A MOTION AND A SECOND TO ADOPT THE AGENDA. I HAVE A MOTION BY MRS. GRIFFIN AND A SECOND BY MRS. HARRIS. PLEASE INDICATE YOUR VOTE BY PRESSING YOUR BUTTON. ARE PRESEN WE HAVE NO MINUTES TO APPROVE AT THIS TIME. VICE CHAIR HARRIS, COULD YOU PLEASE READ THE BOARD GUIDELINES FOR US?

AS AN INDIVIDUAL, I DO WANT TO SAY THAT NEGOTIATIONS AND RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE DISTRICT AND OUR UNION HAVE STRAYED OVER THE LAST TWO OR THREE YEARS AND THAT TROUBLES ME. I WANT TO REMIND EVERYONE THAT WE REALLY DO NOT HAVE A WIN-LOSE STATUS AS IN SPORTS GAMES. IN OUR BUSINESS, WE ARE WIN-WIN, OR WE ARE LOSE-LOSE. I DON'T SEE HOW WE CAN BE WIN-LOSE AND BENEFIT OUR STUDENTS. I HAVE SEEN MORALE DECREASE, AND THERE'S GREAT ANGST AMONG EMPLOYEES. IT IS TRUE THAT TEACHER WORKING CONDITIONS, OUR STUDENT LEARNING CONDITIONS, SO I ASK THAT EACH INDIVIDUAL CAST ACRIMONY ASIDE AND WORK IN A SPIRIT OF COOPERATION FOR THE GOOD OF ALL OF OUR STUDENTS. AS WEARING MY CTA HAT, HE WANT TO REMIND YOU THAT OVER 4,000 PEOPLE SIGNED A PETITION ASKING THAT SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS -- THE SCHOOL BOARD TIME BE CHANGED SO PUBLIC COMMENT CAN COME FROM EMPLOYEES. I'M ONE OF THOSE EMPLOYEES WHO CANNOT GET HERE ON A TUESDAY AFTERNOON BECAUSE OUR DAY ENDS AT 10 TILL 4. THAT'S THE DAY WE OFFICIALLY END ON THE CLOCK ON TUESDAY, BECAUSE THAT'S OUR MEETING DAY. SO I CANNOT POSSIBLY GET HERE. AND I WOULD LOVE TO BE MORE INVOLVED. I WOULD LOVE TO BE HERE MORE OFTEN TO HEAR THE DISCUSSION AND TO BE PART OF THE DISCUSSION. SO I RESPECTFULLY ASK YOU TO PLEASE CONSIDER CHANGING THAT TIME SO WE CAN BE HERE FOR PUBLIC COMMENT AS EMPLOYEES. AS PRESIDENT OF THE HILLSBOROUGH NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFIED TEACHER COUNCIL, WHICH IS AN AFFILIATE OF THE NATIONAL BOARD, I DO WANT TO REMIND YOU, OUR NEXT MEETING IS DECEMBER 5th. WE ALWAYS PUT THOSE MEETING NOTICES IN THE ADMINISTRATIVE BULLETIN AND YOU ARE ALL ALWAYS WELCOME TO ATTEND. SOMETIMES I SEND SPECIFIC INVITATIONS BUT YOU ARE ALWAYS WELCOME. OUR NEXT MEETING, MR. PETERS, WHO IS NOT HERE TODAY, IS GOING TO BE WITH US, AND WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A DISCUSSION ON RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION OF TEACHERS AND STAFF AT OUR HIGHEST NEEDS SCHOOLS, AND I WOULD INVITE ANY OF YOU TO COME AND BE PART OF THAT ROBUST CONVERSATION. SO I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO WORKING WITH ALL OF YOU, WITH OUR COMMON GOAL, WHICH I HOPE IS PROVIDING THE BEST EDUCATION THAT WE CAN FOR THE STUDENTS OF HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY. THANK YOU. [ APPLAUSE ]

>>Cindy Stuart: THANK YOU. RYAN HAVINSKI. WELCOME. YOU HAVE THREE MINUTES.

>> I STAND BEFORE ALL OF YOU AGAIN TODAY FOR SEVERAL REASONS, THE MOST IMPORTANT OF WHICH IS TO EXPRESS OUR GRATEFUL I AM. GRATITUDE IS ONE OF MY FIVE CORE VALUES AND I TRY TO DEMONSTRATE GRATEFULNESS IN ALL THAT I DO AND WHO I AM, AND CONSIDERING THANKSGIVING IS ONLY TWO DAYS AWAY I FIGURED I SHOULD SHARE MY GRATITUDE WITH EVERYONE. I AM THANKFUL TO BE A TEACHER. I BELIEVE I HAVE THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD. I AM GRATEFUL TO HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO TOUCH THE LIVES OF THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS AT THIS POINT IN MY CAREER AND ESPECIALLY THANK FM FOR THE FIRST GROUP OF STUDENTS UNDER MY TUTELAGE. I'M GRATEFUL TO WORK AT A SPECIAL SCHOOL WITH A SPECTACULAR STAFF AND YOU A SO MANY ADMINISTRATION. I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE DEDICATION AND DILIGENCE OF UNION LEADERSHIP ESPECIALLY STEVE NAY BAXTER JENKINS AND JEAN CLEMMENS WHO BROUGHT AN END TO BARGAINING. I AM ALSO GRATEFUL TO YOU, MR. PERHAPS MORE IMPORTANTLY I AM MOST THANKFUL FOR YOU ENSURING THAT ALL RETRO PAYMENTS WOULD BE RECEIVED PRIOR TO THE END OF THE YEAR WHICH WILL UNDOUBTEDLY HELP MANY FAMILIES DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON. I WOULD LIKE TO TELL YOU THE TEACHERS ARE HAPPY WITH THE AGREEMENT BUT MIXED FEELINGS REMAIN. PERHAPS NEXT YEAR WHEN SAVINGS BEGIN TO MATERIALIZE AND THE DISTRICT'S COST CUTTING MEASURES WE CAN CRAFT A BETTER SOLUTION THAT BENEFITS EVERYONE A LITTLE MORE. I WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND GRATITUDE MR. EAKINS TO ADMINISTRATORS, WHO DEDICATE IMNUMERABLE HOURS, AND THAT ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS ESPECIALLY ARE GETTING A RAISE AFTER TWO YEARS. MRS. GRAY AND MRS. SHAMBURGER, WELCOME AND CONGRATULATIONS ON BEING ELECTED. I TRUST THAT BOTH OF YOU WILL BE STAUNCH ADVOCATES FOR STUDENTS AND PROVIDE PRUDENT FISCAL STEWARDSHIP FOR THE TAX DOLLARS. MRS. SNIVELY, THANK YOU FOR BEING A TRUE EXAMPLE OF LEADERSHIP. YOUR WILLINGNESS TO FORGO ANY AND ALL MONEYS IS NOTEWORTHY AND COMMENDABLE. MRS. STUART, THANK YOU FOR CALLING ME LAST WEEK TO HAVE AN INSIGHTFUL ENGAGING ENCOURAGING DIALOGUE. I AM GLAD YOU HAVE STOPPED CLAIMING TRAVEL MONEY FROM YOUR HOME OFFICE TO YOUR WORK SITE. WHILE I NOW REALIZE THERE CANNOT BE AN OFFICIAL MORE A TOMORROW ON TRAVEL SPENDING I AM HOPING FOR AN UNOFFICIAL ONE. I HUMBLY ASK THAT ALL OF YOU PLEDGE TO FOLLOW IN MRS. SNIVELY'S FOOTSTEPS FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE FISCAL YEAR. IF THIS IS TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR THE REST OF YOU, I ASK YOU TO REFRAIN FROM TRAVELING ANY AND ALL AS THE DRAFTING IS COMPLETED AND A CAP ON TRAVEL SPENDING IS PUT IN PLACE. FINALLY, I AM GRATEFUL FOR THE TIME YOU HAVE ALLOTTED ME TO SPEAK TODAY AND I HOPE THAT EACH AND EVERY PERSON IN THIS ROOM AND ACROSS OUR COUNTY, STATE AND NATION HAS AN EXCELLENT THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY SURROUNDED BY FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND HAS A RESTFUL REMAINDER OF THE BREAK AS WELL. THANK YOU. [ APPLAUSE ]

>>Cindy Stuart: THANK YOU. MRS. JEAN CLEMMONS. WELCOME, MRS. CLEMMONS.

>> AS PRESIDENT OF THE HILLSBOROUGH CLASSROOM TEACHERS ASSOCIATION, I HAVE A FEW THINGS I WANT TO SAY TODAY, ESPECIALLY A HUGE DEBT OF GRATITUDE AND APPRECIATION FOR OUR OUTGOING BOARD MEMBERS WHO FOR SO LONG EPITOMIZED THE CHARACTERISTICS THAT WE SO VALUE IN A BOARD. INTELLIGENCE, THOUGHTFULNESS, INTEGRITY, ALWAYS BEING OPEN TO ANY CONVERSATION THAT ANY OF OUR MEMBERS AND EMPLOYEES AND COMMUNITY FOLKS HAVE WANTED TO ENGAGE IN, AND ALWAYS PUTTING NOT EGO OR PERSONAL AGENDAS IN FIRST PLACE IN THEIR LIVES, BUT WHAT'S BEST FOR THE KIDS AND THE EMPLOYEES AND COMMUNITY. THAT IS SOMETHING THAT ALL OF US ASCRIBE TO DO. SO HOPEFULLY WE WILL BE VERY SUCCESSFUL. TO THOSE OF YOU RETURNING, WE HAVE GONE THROUGH SUCH TIMES TOGETHER, GREAT TIMES, BAD TIMES, CHALLENGING TIMES, A RECESSION, AND WE HAVE COME THROUGH THAT TOGETHER. AND I HOPE THAT WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED MOST IS HOW IMPORTANT IT IS FOR US TO WORK TOGETHER. WE WORK SMARTER TOGETHER, AND WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER, AND SO I HOPE THAT WE WILL BE RECOMMITTED TO THE MOST HONEST AND CANDID KINDS OF CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN OURSELVES SO THAT WE CAN HAVE THE BEST -- MAKE THE BEST DECISIONS FOR THIS DISTRICT AND THIS COMMUNITY GOING FORWARD. AND TO OUR TWO OF NEW FOLKS, EXTREME HIGH CONGRATULATIONS. YOU BOTH RAN VERY, VERY GOOD CAMPAIGNS. YOU SHOWED INTEGRITY, YOU SHOWED SINCERITY THROUGHOUT YOUR CAMPAIGNS. YOU GOT SOME HUGE SHOES TO FILL. MAYBE BOOTS TO FILL. AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO HAVING THAT KIND OF COLLABORATIVE, OPEN CONVERSATION, ONGOING CONVERSATION WITH YOU THAT WE HAD WITH YOUR PREDECESSORS. SO BIG CONGRATULATIONS. YOU TWO HAVE EARNED YOUR SPOT ON THIS DAIS, AND WE SUPPORT YOU AND LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING WITH YOU. AND HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO EVERYBODY. [ APPLAUSE ]

>>Cindy Stuart: THANK YOU. MRS. GRIFFIN?

>>April Griffin: THANK YOU. SINCE WE DO HAVE SO MANY REPRESENTATIVES FROM OUR CTA HERE, I WOULD LIKE TO ASK OUR ATTORNEY, MR. PORTER, TO FILL US IN ON WHERE WE ARE AT, BECAUSE WE DID GET THE PETITION THAT WAS SIGNED, AND WE HAD ALREADY BEGUN THE CONVERSATIONS AROUND PUTTING SOME TIME EITHER WITHOUT CHANGING OUR MEETING TIME, PUTTING SOME TIME, MAYBE A TIME CERTAIN ON OUR AGENDA, SO MR. PORTER IS WORKING WITH STAFF ON THAT, AND I WANTED JUST A BRIEF UPDATE ON THAT.

>> DR. VASQUEZ AND I WERE TASKED WITH DEALING THIS ISSUE AND FOR THE NEW BOARD MEMBERS, IT'S A TWO FOLD ISSUE. PUBLIC COMMENT BY LAW IS REQUIRED TO OCCUR BEFORE THE BOARD TAKES ANY ACTION ON ANY ITEMS. SO THERE'S PUBLIC COMMENT BEFORE YOU ACTUALLY GET INTO YOUR AGENDA. WITH THE CTA HAS REQUESTED THAT THERE BE ANOTHER TIME TO MAKE IT POSSIBLE WHEN THEY COULD COME. WE HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT TRYING TO FIND A WAY TO ACCOMPLISH THAT. THE OTHER REQUEST WAS TO HAVE YOUR BOARD MEETING TIMES CHANGED FROM SOMETIME OTHER THAN 3 P.M., WHICH IS SORT OF A LARGER ISSUE THAT THE BOARD WILL HAVE TO DISCUSS. I TALKED TO MRS. BAXTER JENKINS AFTER THE LAST BOARD MEETING, GET A MEETING SET UP TO KIND OF COULD THAT BUT THERE'S A DIALOGUE GOING ON WITH THEM AND WE'LL COME BACK HOPEFULLY EITHER AT THE DECEMBER 6th MEETING OR JANUARY WITH SOME SORT OF FINAL RESOLUTION TO BOTH OF THOSE ISSUES.

>>April Griffin: THANK YOU.

>>Cindy Stuart: THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBERS. THERE ARE NO PROM LAMBATIONS OR NO ADMINISTRATIVE APPOINTMENTS, RECOMMENDATIONS AND REPORTS OF THE SUPERINTENDENT ARE AS FOLLOWS. GRETCHEN SAUNDERS WHO WILL INTRODUCE THE OTHER PARTIES TO HANDLE THIS PART OF THE MEETING. THANK YOU, MRS. SAUNDERS.

>>Gretchen Saunders: THANK YOU. I WOULD LOVE TO INVITE JOHN STOKES UP TO THE PODIUM TO SPEAK. HE'S GOING TO ADDRESS THE BOARD AND WALK YOU THROUGH THE LEASING CORPORATION. MR. STOKES IS OUR BOND COUNSEL AND WORKS FOR THE BONDING COMPANY. MR. STOKES.

>> GOOD AFTERNOON, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, SUPERINTENDENT. AS PART OF YOUR ANNUAL PROCESS, AS YOU GO THROUGH AND REORGANIZE YOUR SCHOOL BOARD, YOU ARE ALSO REQUIRED UNDER LAW TO REORGANIZE YOUR LEASING CORPORATION. THE LEASING CORPORATION'S SOLE PURPOSE IS TO ACT AS ON YOUR LEASING PROGRAMS. IT HAS NO FUNCTION OTHER THAN THAT. SO IT WOULD BE APPROPRIATE AT THIS TIME TO RECESS THE MEETING OF THE SCHOOL BOARD AND COMMENCE A MEETING OF THE LEASING CORPORATION.

>>Cindy Stuart: I WILL RECESS THE NOVEMBER 22ND SCHOOL BOARD MEETING, AND CONVENE THE MEETING OF THE SCHOOL BOARD LEASING CORPORATION.

>> AND MRS. GRIFFIN IS STILL IN CHARGE OF THAT ONE. SO IF YOU COULD FOLLOW THE SCRIPT.

>> MR. STOKES?

>> YES, YOU ARE STILL THE CHAIR AT THIS POINT IN TIME. YOU NEED TO REORGANIZE THE BOARD AND I THINK WE HAVE A GOOD SCRIPT FOR YOU TO WORK OFF OF.

>>April Griffin: ALL RIGHT. I WILL RECOMMEND THE APPOINTMENT OF THE CURRENT MEMBERS OF THE SCHOOL BOARD AS THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE CORPORATION. I NEED A MOTION AND A SECOND. I HAVE A MOTION BY MRS. VALDES, SECOND BY MRS. STUART. IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? SEEING NONE, BOARD MEMBERS, PLEASE INDICATE YOUR VOTE BY PRESSING YOUR BUTTON. AND IT'S UNANIMOUS. I WILL NOW ENTERTAIN A MOTION TO APPOINT CINDY STUART AS THE CHAIR OF THE CORPORATION. I NEED A MOTION AND A SECOND. I HAVE A MOTION BY MRS. VALDES, A SECOND BY MRS. SNIVELY. IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? SEEING NONE, PLEASE INDICATE YOUR VOTE BY PRESSING YOUR BUTTON. AND IT'S UNANIMOUS. I WILL NOW ENTERTAIN A MOTION TO APPOINT SALLY HARRIS AS THE VICE CHAIR OF THE CORPORATION. I NEED A MOTION AND A SECOND. I HAVE A MOTION BY MRS. VALDES, A SECOND BY MRS. SNIVELY. IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? SEEING NONE, PLEASE INDICATE YOUR VOTE BY PRESSING YOUR BUTTON. AND IT IS UNANIMOUS. >>Cindy Stuart: THE ONLY THING REMAINING FOR US TO DO IS BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS. OH, I'M SORRY. WE NEED TO APPROVE THE ONE AGENDA ITEM WE HAVE. SO I NEED A MOTION AND A SECOND TO HAVE APPROVE THE ITEMS PULLED FROM THE CONSENT AGENDA. I HAVE A MOTION BY MRS. VALDES. A SECOND BY MRS. HARRIS. AND A THIRD BY MRS. GRIFFIN. >>Susan Valdes: THANK YOU VERY MUCH, MADAM CHAIR, AND CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR CHAIRMANSHIP AND VICE CHAIR HARRIS, CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR LEADERSHIP AS WELL. MR. EAKINS AND DR. VASQUEZ AND STAFF, I JUST WANTED TO THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR HARD WORK AND DEDICATION. AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THESE NEXT FOUR YEARS WITH THIS TEAM. AND IT'S AN EXCITING TIME FOR SURE. AND I ALSO WANTED TO REMIND EVERYONE THAT THE COMMON GOAL THAT WE SHOULD ALL HAVE FOR THIS DISTRICT IS OUR VISION, WHICH IS PREPARING STUDENTS FOR LIFE. AND I THINK THAT ALL OF US NEED TO REMEMBER THAT THAT'S WHAT WE ARE CHARGED WITH DOING, IS PREPARING STUDENTS FOR LIFE. SO I HOPE THAT THAT IS THE COMMON THEME THROUGHOUT OUR DISTRICT AND THE COMMON GOAL, BECAUSE THAT IS REALLY, TRULY WHAT THIS IS ALL ABOUT, IN AFFORDING THE CHILDREN THE OPPORTUNITIES IN WHICH THEY ARE FIT FOR THEM TO BE ABLE TO REACH THEIR GOAL AND PREPARING STUDENTS FOR LIFE. MY LAST COMMENT IS I WANT TO WISH EVERYONE A HAPPY THANKSGIVING. AND JUST REMEMBER THE THINGS THAT ARE MOST PRECIOUS TO YOU, AND ALSO JUST BE THANKFUL FOR WAKING UP THE NEXT DAY. THANK YOU.

>>Cindy Stuart: THANK YOU, MRS. VALDES. ANY OTHER BOARD COMMENTS? MRS. SNIVELY?

>>Melissa Snively: I WANT TO TAKE A MOMENT TO CONGRATULATE OUR NEW CHAIR AND VICE CHAIR, LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR LEADERSHIP THIS YEAR. I WANT TO SAY ANOTHER CONGRATULATIONS TO MRS. SHAMBURGER AND MRS. GRAY. I LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING ALONGSIDE YOU, AND WANT TO WELCOME YOU. I KNOW -- WE ALL KNOW SITTING UP HERE, THE CAMPAIGN, HOW MUCH WORK IT IS TO CAMPAIGN, IT'S GRUELING, PHYSICALLY GRUELING, FINANCIALLY GRUELING, EMOTIONALLY GRUELING. SO WE UNDERSTAND THAT. AND SOMETIMES, I AM JUST GOING TO GIVE YOU SOME UNSOLICITED ADVICE AT THIS POINT BECAUSE I CAN. SO I WOULD SAY THAT I GET ASKED A LOT WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE ON THE SCHOOL BOARD AND HOW TO MANAGE IT, BECAUSE I KNOW TAMMY THAT YOU WORK, AND SO I GET ASKED A LOT OF THAT, HOW DO YOU DO IT? HOW DO YOU HAVE A FULL-TIME POSITION AND HOW DO YOU HAVE FOUR CHILDREN IN THE SCHOOL, AND A HUSBAND AND ALL THOSE THINGS TO TAKE CARE OF? SO I'LL TELL YOU THE BEST ADVICE I CAN GIVE YOU IS TO UNDERSTAND YOUR ROLE AS A SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER, AND YOUR STATUTORY OBLIGATION, AND THE MOST REWARDING TIME THAT I HAVE -- BECAUSE IT IS SO HARD, IT IS HARD WORK BUT SO REWARDING WHEN YOU ARE ABLE TO STAY IN YOUR LANE AND DO THE JOB THAT YOU ARE ELECTED TO DO. THAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF THE JOB. DO YOUR BEST AT THAT. AND IT WILL BE MORE REWARDING THAN YOU COULD EVER IMAGINE, AND SO WORTH ALL OF THE EFFORT THAT YOU TOOK TO GET HERE. AND I AM SO EXCITED TO HAVE YOU ON THIS DAIS, AND I REALLY LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING WITH YOU OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL YEARS. SO CONGRATULATIONS. AND I WOULD LIKE TO WISH EVERYONE A HAPPY THANKSGIVING AS WELL.

>>Cindy Stuart: THANK YOU, MRS. SNIVELY. BOARD MEMBERS, I WOULD JUST LIKE TO CONCLUDE ONCE AGAIN BY THANKING ALL OF THE STAFF THAT'S HERE TODAY. I KNOW THAT THIS PROBABLY STARTED MORE THAN A MONTH AND A HALF AGO LOOKING AT THE REORGANIZATION MEETING. WE HAVE MANY NEW SECRETARIES ON THE FLOOR WITH THE BOARD. SO THIS IS ALL BRAND NEW FOR THEM. SO I WANT TO THANK THEM PERSONALLY, BOTH THE COMMUNICATIONS STAFF AND OUR SECRETARIES, FOR MAKING SURE THAT THIS CAME OFF SEAMLESSLY TODAY BECAUSE I KNOW THAT THEY PUT A LOT OF ENERGY INTO THIS. SO THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART FOR MAKING SURE THAT WE LOOK GOOD UP HERE. WE APPRECIATE YOU VERY MUCH. AND WITH THAT, I WOULD LIKE TO WISH EVERYONE HERE A HAPPY THANKSGIVING. AND WE WILL SEE EVERYONE BACK ON THE 28th. BOARD MEMBERS, IF YOU COULD HANG OUT FOR JUST A MINUTE. THE COMMUNICATIONS TEAM WOULD LIKE TO GET A PICTURE OF THE NEWLY SEATED BOARD BEFORE YOU LEAVE. AND WE ARE ADJOURNED.
